Rick, you sure that's not the.....uhh...charcoal canister, I think it is? My 74 Midget had a pancake looking thing on the right side of the trunk that I mistook for the pump at first. When it didn't respond to being hammered on, I checked the manual and found that it was one ingredient in the catch-them-fuel-vapors (and store them in the trunk?) setup.
