Forgot to copy the group. Also, forgot to say why I wouldn't use the
come-along (which is the cable ratchet type of hoist, about $25). I used
one quite happily until I dropped an engine, thankfully not far or on
anything attached to me, when the ratchet thing kind of jammed while I was
lowering the engine. After that, I bought the chain hoist which is actually
made for this kind of job. Now, I'm getting a proper engine hoist since I
can afford one, and my new shop has drywall rather than rafters as a
ceiling. They really are the best thing to use.

personal favorite, the famous "strip every thing off the engine that comes
off, including the side covers and tappets, grab the engine and lift while
staggering backwards" approach.

>I wouldn't use a come-along unless I was both cheap and desperate, a proper
hoist suspended from a strong overhead works well, an actual engine hoist
works so much better it's not to be believed, and splitting the engine from
the tranny and lifting the engine out alone is by far the simplest way to do
it if you have a Midget or Mk2 sprite or later. You then just climb into
the engine bay and lift the tranny and driveshaft out by hand, and replace
in the revers order (put the tranny and driveshaft in as a unit, then drop
the engine in. On a bugeye, I suspect that the lack of front body panels
makes it far easier to get the engine and tranny in at the same time. But
every one has their own best way!
