I had a similar problem a couple of years ago, and ended up finding that one
of the starter brush leads was grounded out against the case (It had welded
itself in place) so I only had one brush and a dead short pulling the
power - I replaced the + wire too, it had been getting pretty hot! (BTW,
being a cheapskate, I just heat-shrunk the lead and re-used it, it's been
fine since)
