If the thrust washers are gone, you would be able to
move the front pulley about 1/8" back and forth.
This will be obvious- no dial indicator needed!
If you choose to open the oil pan, do yourself
a favor and get a can of Gunk Engine-Brite and
a pressure washer, and clean the underside of
the engine and the front cross member REALLY well.
It will make the job much less unpleasant!
