David,

You said that, because of the scarring on the cylinder wall, that it
"Looks like I'll have to have the cylinders bored one size bigger
because of that" - you are planning to bore out all 6 cylinders then?

Any cylinders you do bore out oversize, you'll need oversize pistons for
too, so if you bore out all cylinders you'll need 6 new pistons.

If you do bore out only one cylinder, and fit one oversize piston to
that cylinder, then that piston will be heavier than all the rest, which
will rather spoil the inherently excellent balance of a straight six
engine - although the difference may be too small to be noticable.

I very much doubt Spitfire pistons are the same as GT6 pistons, or could
be made to fit, the Spitfire engine and the GT6 engine are completely
separate designs, one is not evolved from the other. The GT6 engine is
essentially the same design as the TR5/TR250/TR6 engine, and the
2000/2500/2.5PI big saloons, but the different capacities will probably
have different bore sizes.

As for the piston ring issue, I don't really know. My personal guess
would be that the decrease in power was gradual, as one piston ring went
at a time, and performance would have kept on getting a bit worse and a
bit worse, but there are people out there who really can't be bothered
doing anything about it and will just keep driving until the car won't
go any more. But then I'm always an optimist in these sorts of
situations! ;-)

Richard
