It's certainly illegal to remove them.  Both illumination is required,
as well reflectivity.  Could you get away with it?  Probably.  Though if
you're going through annual safety inspections, I wouldn't think it
would fly.  Might get by one year or another.  But getting through every
year, doubt it.
 
If you don't like the stock replacement units (and they are available),
you can go with either aftermarket or other vehicle.  Just look around
and see if you like something better.
