Some random ideas:

1:  Put little bits of modeling clay (play-doh)
on the striker and close the lid, to see where
things are contacting.

2:  Or try using a white board marker on the plastic
striker.  (Sort of a poor man's Prussian Blue).

3:  Put a very small child in the trunk with a
flashlight.

BTW, I never lock my trunk, because any thief
could simply tear it open without even trying.
