Did the oil pressure gauge go back to zero when you finally turned off the 
engine?
If so, then it is probably working OK.  Simply replace the oil light sender 
unit;
it is almost certainly broken.

Water getting on the sender would have no effect.  Consider driving in a 
rainstorm...
