I wouldn't cut the shifter.  Instead, I'd go to RadioShack and admire the 
various switches they have that you can install on the existing non-o/d 
shifter.  Then you can sell the o/d shifter on e-bay and make money on this.

I've seen racers install an o/d switch on the steering wheel.  Both toggle 
switches and momentary contact.  I like the idea of the momentary contact in 
any gear, combined with a toggle switch down on the shifter.  Then I can use 
the o/d on 2nd and perhaps even first gear, if the pressure is high enough.

In driving I try to use the o/d on 4th gear only, for no particular reason.  I 
have a hard time remembering to throw the switch off, which can make shifting 
between 2nd and 3rd interesting at times.
