There is a bleed hole at the bottom of the water pump... (or it is
supposed to be at the bottom). With the 3 bolt positions, you could
install it with the hole at the bottom, or on either side.

After looking at the assembly, I see what you are talking about. The
pump itself is symmetrical and can be mounted in any of 3 positions. I
doubt seriously if it really makes any differenced which way it is
positioned unless you have an early type with a grease zerk for
lubricating the pump. If water leaks out to the bleed hole, it may pool
up if the hole is on top but will eventually find its way out once the
hole is full.
As Andy said, if the thing has only recently been installed, you may be
able to save the gasket but if not they are easy to make using some
gasket paper and a ball peen hammer.
