1. Brakes.
Many cars today do have the circuits split diagonally, for the very reasons you
describe. But this involves some other hydraulic circuitry to make it work.
Triumph simply split them fore and aft. Interestingly, in about 1978 Triumph
reversed their plumbing to the master cylinder for unknown reasons.
2. Chassis data.
Two up means two people. I think the weight used for two people was about 165
lbs., but I'm far from sure of that.
3. Gearbox.
It's the overall gear ratio the engine sees in relationship to the tires in the
highest gear. Since the Spitfire has a 4 speed with 4th being direct, it's
simply the rear end ratio. In the case of 5 speed transmissions with
overdrives, it will be lower then the final drive ratio.
