Jack,
I have made the switch to twin 1 1/4" SU's on my 70 Spit MK3.  Big difference 
in throttle response, power etc.  For the quick revving 1296 there is no 
substitute.  They are way cooler than the single ZS especially with velocity 
stacks which change the sound to the nasty side.  I rebuilt them once when I 
put 
them on and really have not had to touch them since. OH, I did drop in 
different 
needles when I put the race cam in which are available for SU's.
