Thanks for the responses - at least I know I'm on the right track.
The Mallory does have a vac advance, but I haven't hooked it up. All the
internal bits are working.
I'm running super unleaded (93 PON, US),in anticipation of the higher CR
and new tune.
Thanks again. :)

I have some questions on tuning my newly-freshened 1500. Here's the new
spec:
- -flat top pistons
- -TSI 275-4 cam
- -twin HS4's with AAQ needles and K&N's
- -Maniflow 4-2-1 header

Hello Chris,
I am running a setup very close to yours although no headers and
different
needles (I do not remember which ones at the moment). In any event, you
need to increase your idle speed a bit by turning the idle screw down a
half turn or so on each of the carbs (linkage disconnected between the
two
for tuning). Your loosing rpm when you lift your carb piston because
your
still lean. You can drop the jets another half turn also. These are just
starting points for getting the engine running. I am running about 8
degrees BTDC and no vacuum advance or retard. Make sure your mechanical
advance is working correctly also. If you are running with vacuum
advance
you may need to retard your ignition timing a bit depending on the gas
you
are running. It may take a little bit of experimenting to get everything
just right but this should get you in the ball park to start. From there
you need to balance the air flow through the carbs and the fuel flow for
proper mixture. Good Luck.
