Sounds like you've either got it wired up wrong, or you've got a problem
with your ignition switch. Here's a wiring diagram of the 10Si Delco

Notice that he charging light needs to be able to see the positive
connection with the battery through the ignition switch in order to have
a circuit. If you reversed the #1 and #2 connectors, you could cause
the lighting problem you describe I believe.
