Several months ago, I bought a Mountney wood-rimmed steering wheel from
Rimmer Bros. Once I figured out a way to get the horn to work (the bits
didn't line up with each other), I was very pleased - it looked extremely
smart. But, after just a couple of months, cracks started to appear in the
wood finish.
I phoned Rimmer Bros, and they sent me a replacement steering wheel that
day. I swapped them over, and once again was pleased with the way it
looked. But once again, one month later, cracks have started to appear.
Yesterday, I spoke to the guys from Rimmer Bros in person the TSSC show at
Duxford. They told me that they knew about this problem - every Mountney
wood-rimmed steering wheel they've sold for the last 18 months has done
this. They told me that they can pinpoint, to the nearest week, the date on
which the problem started, and that Mountney are aware of the problem and
are working on fixing it (for 18 months???)
I asked what the solution was. "Just keep sending them back to us when they
start to crack, and we'll keep sending you a knew one." Yeah, right. "Or
you could swap it for a Mota Lita one, they don't have that problem." Ok,
but they're twice the price aren't they? "Yes, they're a little more
expensive".
So - point one, don't buy a Mountney wood-rimmed steering wheel. And point
two - why are Rimmers selling parts which they know are faulty? And then,
when I complain that they're faulty, why do they send me another part with
an identical fault, without telling me? Surely they should withdraw them
until Mountney fix the problem? (This would also give Mountney an incentive
to fix the problem asap.)
As for my car, I think I will end up fitting a Mountney leather-rimmed
steering wheel, which costs the same as the wood-rimmed one but doesn't
crack after two months.
