So, I went to adjust my valves. When I removed the valve cover,
I noticed a large quantity of what looked like silver-colored anti-seize
compound on the top of the cylinder head, surrounding most of the valve springs.

When I removed the springs for one valve, I realized that the metal discs that
go between the bottom of the springs and the head were disintegrating into dust
(plus a few larger fragments). It looks like the movement of the springs was
somehow grinding the discs apart! Interestingly, the bottoms of the
springs looked totally unaffected.

I had skimmed the head a couple of years ago, and naturally I and
R+R-ed the valve train. But what could have happened to cause this problem?

Fortunately the discs are real cheap and easy to get, but now it looks
like I will have to remove the head to clean up all this glop, and also
pull out the valve lifters to make sure no crud got into them, and
remove and clean out the oil pan.
