For those listers who helped me out, and those of a curious nature,

I returned to my car late at night (after waiting over an hour for the bus
- it took me home in 8 minutes - now you know why I have a spit...)

Anyway - I thought I'd insert the key to see if any magical angels had
miraculously fixed my car while I had been away.

To my surprise the oil and ignition light came on... then I turned the key
and they went off - and then glowed very dimly again.

Oh well, no joy, so I turned it off. Tried a couple more times (like about
10) - and the lights came on again... mysterious...

After startling the neighbour next door with a loud "woo-hoo" - I thought
I had better try and get the car to actually turn over. So I got out the
jump leads - bypassed the starter solenoid.... vroooommm... back to life.

There is current at the 2 small cables that go in to the sides of the
solenoid when I turn the key - so Ive ordered a starter solenoid from the
local motor factor place in hope that this is the problem.

Incidentally, the light going dim after turning the key stopped after I
disconnected the 2 small cables from the solenoid.

Until tomorrow I shall suspiciouly be starting my car from under the
bonnet with jump leads....

Tally ho,

James
