Once, as an experiment, I took off my fan and drove around without it (don't get stuck in traffic!). It seemed a bit less noisy, but only a little less. There seemed to be a bit more power, but only a little bit more. So I put the original fan back on and stopped worrying about fans, electric and otherwise.
