Hi James,
A couple of things you may want to think about.
Before you bin the alternator, have a good look at it.
If its bearings are rough its probably worth a replacement (although you
can replace them)
Check the brushes (undo the plastic cover and then a couple of hex head
screws). If they're worn out you can replace them (Something I learn't
when running a metro at uni one set costs a quid or two).
If both the bearings and bushes are fine then its probably something
that is not owner solvable. Best left to an automotiive elctrician
(worth a thought as I once got an alternator fully rebuilt for a tenner).
Another alternative is, as suggested, to raid the scrap yards for an
equivalent lucas unit, bare in mind though a recon one from an auto
dealer can be quite cheap if you don't mention it is for a spit!
Finally, are you sure it is the alternator?
For me, I had the same problem, and it ended up being a knackered
battery (Kwick Fit are doing free "digital" battery testing at the the mo!)
Cheers
Tim
