Differentials and driveshafts

Can someone tell me the length dimensions of an over drive drive shaft?  And
if it is better to use an older unit than one with the soup can joint?

I would like to know how to tell the 3.69 and 3.89 differentials apart.  I
think the 3.69 diff was used for the overdrive, can someone fill me in on the
overdrive components.
