Hi,
Fitting an oil cooler on a Spit is worthwile if your
usage of the car warrants it.
That is, if you intend to do competition then it's a
must, if you intend to do mostly fast road or motorway
runs then it's also worthwile.
I run an oil cooler without a thermostat because I
drive my Spit in a very spirited fashion (!) and so
the oil warms up quickly and stays hot.
If you intend to do some fast road work then fit a
cooler with a thermostat controlled valve which opens
when the oil is warm enough.
If you potter around in your car then you don't need a
cooler.
I would recommend a higher capacity oil pump if you
fit a cooler 'cos you're effectively increasing the
sump volume.
I use rubber hose in my competition car because you
can readily see the condition of the hose. This ain't
so if the hose is covered with braid.
My cooler is a 13 row model.
By the way if anyone can tell me what the correct oil
temperature range actually is, on a 1296, it'd be
appreciated.
Cheers,
B.C.
