Finally got the trunnion bolt replaced on my '78 Spitfire. Fortunately, that
part of the project is portable right now so I could work on it on the living
room floor while watching the Browns.
Many thanks to everybody who posted suggestions, advice and photos. The
information helped quite a bit.
The biggest anomaly I found was in getting the distance tube in place. Haynes
says to just "fit" it. It had slid inside the nylon bushings perfectly
before. However, once they were pressed in the fit was too tight, even
greased. I wound up also pressing the tube in. It shaved off nylon as it
went thru.
Getting the whole thing into the vertical link was also a challenge, as
everyone said it would be. At first, it was too wide to fit where it needed
to go. I rigged a C-clamp and and old bolt/nut, putting the bolt thru one arm
of the link, then using the clamp to apply pressure to spread the arms of the
link just enough to get the trunnion started.
Wound up w/ me guiding the link while my wife rapped on it w/ a hammer to get
it lined up, a family project.
Just dawned on me...could have used a punch to line things up more easily.
I'll have to remember that for the next one.
