It's a long shot, but if anybody worked on the car, specifically the left
axle and had to replace that axle, it might have been replaced with a later
MK4/1500 one which is an inch longer. The Radius rod and radius rod
attachment at the body would also have to have been replaced because they
are different as well but it's a possibility and would cause the symptoms
you describe -
