Hi Listers,
Thanks for all the inputs. Here's what happened.
Turns out when I rebuilt the speedometer about a year ago I must have reversed
the warning light sockets for the Oil and Ignition Warning lights. So, when I
took it out for a drive the other night and the oil warning light lit up, I
thought I had an oil pressure problem. Turns out my alternator must have bit
the dust after 70 thousand miles. When I hooked up a pressure gauge to check
the oil pressure, I must not have cranked long enough to gat a reading. In
the process of doing further diagnostics today I noticed that when I pulled
the sender unit to swap it for a new one, a lot of oil ran down out of the
copper tubing for the pressure gauge. When I saw that, I figured I had to be
pumping oil so I plugged in the coil wire and started it up. Sure enough it
climbed to 65 pounds.
Just ordered a new alternator. A heck of a easier than dropping the pan and
who knows what.
Now I know why they call them idiot lights. they were referring to me.
Regards.
