Who wants tyres with masses of grip?  It only makes it harder to get the
tail out on the roundabouts... :-)

You want the tyres that will give the most miles/pound, I would say.  The
cheapest tyres may also wear out quickly, so they are not the bargain they
seem, for a car that is used every day like yours and mine, for normal road
use.

My suggestion would be the the cheapest tyre made by a manufacturer that
you've heard of.  I use Continental EcoContact, which tend to cost around
#30-#35 a corner fitted.  The spare should be the cheapest tyre you can find
that will hold air and has some tread on it!!
