James,
Congratulations on getting through the MOT - I don't think I've ever got a
pass on my first visit to the test centre!!
I found a garage where I used to live that did the same as yours. I really
appreciate that attitude - they treat you like you are not a complete
mechanical idiot, the fact that you help tends to save time (although I'm
sure they get much more benefit by getting you to do work that they would
otherwise have to pay someone else to do!), and because you are there in the
bay with them they can point out any faults they do find, on the car, as
they go, instead of some vague (and often illegible) statement about
"corrosion near suspension mounting point" on the fail sheet, without
pointing out exactly where they found the hole.
Now I've moved I'm going to have to start all over again finding a test
centre that I like. I tried one so far (recommended by my boss, who rallies
Peugeot 205s and is restoring a TR7 V8 and a BMW 2002 for rallying), but
they a) took an hour to do a test!! b) wouldn't let me in the bay, but made
me watch from a viewing area from where I couldn't see a lot.
Daffy is up for her test in a couple of weeks, so I'll have to do some more
looking...
Richard
