Iain,
I've had this problem before. I couldn't remove the stud at all, it was
rusted in there absolutely solid. I ended up replacing the manifold with a
second-hand one from TRGB for not-a-lot of money.
Tip for the future - use the recommended brass nuts. Their thread will
strip before the thread on the stud. Also they will not rust in place.
Also, I recommend doing away with the gasket. It blew so often on me I
decided to try with no gasket at all - it's worked fine, no noticable
leakage at the join or extra noise, and no blown gasket to replace every
couple of months!
