My car when I got her had an Allison and now a Pertronix and the drive
resistor is only part of the original Lucas and not needed for anything
else. However if it is the ballast resistor ( later cars like my '76
have an inbuilt ballast resistor in the wiring harness) then you will
need that to help starting.
The drive resistor is pretty big and it connects into the wiring loom
down near the steering column and is mounted just below the distributor.
A separate ballast resistor I would expect to see it up near the coil
connected between the coil and the starter solenoid I believe.
