Just thought I'd thank all on the list for the great discussion on all
things Spitfire over the last few months. I bought my Spitfire 4 (1963)
back in November last year, and have since been steadily sourcing bits and
pieces to replace 40 years worth of previous owners' fidgeting with her.
I have just got the car back from the local Triumph specialist, who has done
a great job of replacing the 1147cc Herald engine with a 1300cc Mk3 engine,
extractors (ceramic coated inside and out), stainless steel exhaust system
and a Mk4/Dolomite all synchro gearbox.
I have now turned my attention to the interior and have started replacing
the very strange array of buttons, knobs and instruments with the right
knobs and a new instrument panel complete with Jaeger gauges (many thanks to
Joe Curry who did a wonderful job of refurbishing a panel and associated
gauges, and who took the trouble of sending them all the way to Brisbane
Australia!).
Genevieve is off to the local instrument fitter this week to have a new
atcho cable installed and the gauges calibrated. Throughout the last few
months, although I have generally been a silent onlooker to the list, the
discussion threads that have been posted have provided me with a great deal
of sound advice and direction on how to go about restoring my little beast,
and I'd just like to say how much I have enjoyed reading your conversations
and appreciate the existence of this great list - I don't know I would have
been without it!
All the best to you all from Brisbane.
