Well, it looks like Freddy's 1296 engine is terminally wounded, so my spare
1500 is going in. Went out to my folks and got it (thank goodness for beat
up old Peugeot station wagon TSV's that you don't care about getting
dirty). Doused it with Gunk to clean the decades of dirt off and took a
good look at things. Brings to mind a few questions.
1. I am going to have to swap water pumps - Freddy has the 79-80 cooling
system. Any tricks of the trade?
2. Will the distributor from the '69 1296 swap to the '74 1500? The 1296
has a Crane ignition fitted, but on the other hand the 1500 has a
functional vacuum advance unit. Could I swap the Crane to the 1500
distributor, or the vacuum advance to the 1296?
3. I am going to have to swap clutches for sure, as the 1296 has a 20
spline, and the 1500 has a 10. The flywheels are the same though, correct?
The clutch is only a couple years old, but should I just go ahead and get a
new one? I figured I would replace the throwout bearing anyway - that's
what went the last time.
4. Any general advice for doing this as painlessly as possible. It seems
like a pretty straightforward task, but I have only removed a Spitfire
engine, I've never had to put one back in! :-)
