That's exactly what Daffy's PO did when he converted her to O/D.  For the
first several months of my ownership of her the o/d would keep cutting in
and out again, making the car kangeroo up the road.  Eventually, I had the
tunnel cover off (to replace the clutch) and I discovered the home-made
harness.  I bought a new one from Rimmers for very few quid, and the problem
instantly disappeared and has never returned.

If you are going to make your own wiring harnesses, be DAMNED sure that your
abilities to make solid, reliable electrical connections are at least as
good as the professionals.  Otherwise, my advice would be to leave it to
them!

BTW, with a bit of wiggling I managed to get the wiring up the gearstick
without breaking or cutting anything.  Can't remember exactly the process,
I'm afraid, it was a few years ago now!  Persevere, it is possible...
