James,

There is the main 'L' shaped bracket that holds the nut and attaches to the
bonnet - something like this
-----__
      l\
      l \
      l \
      l___\
           \
            \
            l
l (looking forwards at the rear right corner of the bonnet

On the top of the horizontal section of this 'L' is an inverted flattish
'U', which actually traps the nut:

       ______________________
l ---------------- l (what you would be able to see if
you
       l l l l could look outwards at the 'L'
l l l l bracket if the upright bit of the
'L'
 ______l l______________l l______ wasn't there)
-------------- ---------------------

I think this bit is what Mike is referring to as the 'flap', but since it is
welded both sides (I think) I can't see it being that easy to bend back.
Thing is, I was actually there when Mike did this, and I remember a fair
amount of fiddling and not getting anywhere, but I don't recall exactly what
he did to get at the nut eventually. Maybe his nut had been banging against
his flap (sorry Mike, I hope people don't get the wrong idea from this
statement!) and his flap had already broken loose at one side?

Unless you go back to trying to jam something in there to stop the broken
nut rotating, I think you will have to look at some way of breaking that
flap off. Can you get at it with a hack-saw? It doesn't really matter if
you mangle it and can't get it (or a replacement) back on, as you will still
be able to fix your bonnet cone with a nut either side of the 'L' bracket -
it will just be marginally more fiddly to fix.

Good luck!

Richard
