I was just having another look at the website John directed us to. In
addition to Millers VSP it recommended Millers CSP for competition use, with
a further octane boost, and the phrase:

...this is the same as VSP but with an Octane boost of 4 points. Imagine
what 99 RON fuel will do to your car's performance!...

This is a COMPLETE fallacy. The impression is often given that, because
high performance and racing cars use high-octane fuel, then high-octane fuel
gives better performance. The opposite is true.

Octane in fuel is increased to make the fuel more difficult to ignite. For
maximum performance you want the fuel to burn as quickly as possible -
increasing octane levels will make the fuel burn more slowly.

However, high-performance engines, as a way of improving performance, have
higher compression ratios. This leads to the danger of the fuel igniting
early, before the spark plug fires - it ignites just from the heat of the
engine and the high compression. These engines therefore are forced to use
high-octane fuel to prevent pre-ignition. The advantages of high
compression far outweigh the performance disadavantates of high-octane fuel.

The best petrol for your car is the petrol with the lowest octane rating
that will not cause pre-ignition.

Here endeth the lesson!!
