Unknown! Mystery

Greetins! I'm a brandnew 80 Spitfire owner.Just
          aquired my fully restored #19 LBC.
And i have LBC, mystery on my hands.In the footwells
L&R side their is a depression on the side,approx;
6in rnd.w/hole in center(1in)to the outside.What is 
purpose of that?(radio speaker,vent or
what....................any civilized answer is
