I missed the beginning of this thread. If you are painting the car or part of
it don't be concerned about the color. Stop by your local automotive paint
store and tell them the problem. You can purchase a rust converter product
for about $15 that is squirted on like window cleaner. It converts the rust
to a black (oxide?) substance thus killing it. You use a slightly damp cloth
to wipe the area then apply the Zero Rust canned spray paint, $6. Don't worry
about the flaws, if you are you are going about it all wrong. You should
strive for craftsman results or really not bother. It is really easier than
you might imagine to properly prepare for paint but will take much longer in
time than you might imagine to do it right. Again, your local auto paint
store is a great resource.
