All else being equal - alignment okay and what Craig Smith said - someone
may have pulled the steering wheel and not realigned it properly in the
past. Mark it & pull it and turn it the number of degrees to correct the
problem and re-install. Otherwise, get everything re-aligned and
(technically) the steering wheel should be right if it is where it was from
the factory and not too much wear has occurred. Assuming the factory was
right in the first place. :)

Subject: Steering Wheel Alignment Question

Hi Lister's,

I just had a question to all the experts on the list about steering
wheel alignment. My 78 spit's steering wheel, at level ground wheels
pointing straight ahead, is cocked slightly several degrees up to the
right. It's been that way since I got the car two years ago. I can't
detect any ill effects but I believe the steering wheel spokes should be
flat across with the wheels pointing straight.

My question is, is it a big deal to correct this problem and am I doing
any damage that I'm unaware of to the car? I'd like to have a wheel
alignment done but I think the steering wheel should be in the proper
position before this is done.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thx in advance for the help. - mike chmura
