This particular starting problem sounds very likely to be caused by
over-advanced timing to me.

Maybe your centrifugal advance is not working properly?  This should advance
timing with engine speed - if it was not doing this, and your engine was
given the ideal advance at high speeds, then it would be way too advanced at
low speeds.
