Sounds like a reasonable theory, although I haven't heard of it being done
before (then again, 95% of my knowledge comes from the last couple of years
postings on this list!).
I would do a few calcs to see how much of a difference the slightly larger
bore would make. You may find that, relative to the standard gap, the
increase is pretty tiny and it wouldn't be worth doing - or indeed that the
tolerance on your abilities to machine an exact gap are larger than the
change in the gap in the first place.
Just a thought for a question you should ask yourself, I have no idea what
the answer would be!
