Finally after 7 months and 6 attempts at passing my spit finally passed
visual, functional, and finally emissions in California. I finally have
license plates, Cool!
What did it take: loose the headers for stock exhaust manifold w/stock cat
converter, complete EGR system, complete rebuild of that made to run rich ZS
carb., rebuilt carbon canister, 2 atdc timing at 800rpm idle. Extras:
guarantee you'll pass the sniffer test fuel additive, new universal 3 way
catalytic converter spliced into the exhaust under the rear frame cross
member. The car just missed passing and the referee asked is there anything
that can be done. Well yes, I can hook up the hidden electric air pump I have
in the trunk to pump air into the cat converters nipple. As he turned away I
connected the air pumps hot wire to the positive side of the coil. He ran the
check again and it passed. The air turns the HC's and CO into H2O and CO2,
acceptable and desired output.
This has taken a lot to get it to pass, Thanks to everyone on the list that
offered ideas, especially Howie in the Nevada desert (aka
triumphowie@aol.com) for saving me $hundreds with his $30 price for a
functional EGR system, converter, and stock exhaust manifold plus other
goodies he threw in cause he's a spitfire nut also. He has a few more extra
parts still I'm sure.
What's next? A '72 smog exempt spit.
