Iain,

With this level of symptom detail, the only suggestion is to go through the
basics one by one.  First rule seems to be that 90% of all tuning problems
are electrical.  Therefore - check your timing, check your points gap, check
your vacuum advance, check your centrifugal advance, check the condition of
your distributor cap.  If you have a spare condensor and/or coil and/or HT
leads and/or spark plugs try those (one change at a time) and see if your
symptoms change.

Failing that check the colour of deposiits on the spark plugs.  Black
indicates too rich, white too lean, biscuity brown about right.  This guide
won't guide you to perfect tune, but will tell you if you are in the right
area.  Check any fuel filters you have (there is one in the mechanical fuel
pump, some owners have added further filters).

If none of this helps come back and ask again!
