Richard's comment (below) started me thinking about which modern (UK) cars
are most similar in performance terms to the Spitfire 1500 that James is now
thrashing around Kent. The original performance figures for the 1500, as
stated in John Thomason's excellent Guide to Originality, are 11.3 sec 0-60
mph, top speed of 101 mph (US figures will probably differ from this due to
the harsher emission requirements). A quick check reveals that the closest
to this is a Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec which manages 11.2 sec and 102 mph.
There are not many modern cars that cannot beat the Spitfire's performance,
but I know which I would prefer to drive.
