Rimmer Bros. has a Lenham top made of fiberglass. It's
regularly 250 GBP (non VAT) which is about $400 US(?).
It comes with hardware.
The ones you usually see on ebay tend to run between
$150 and $275 depending on their condition. They
usually need some work (broken glass, deteriorated
trim, rust, dents, etc.) more often then not-don't
include the mounting hardware (another $50+ from VB?)
and you should make sure that the seller is willing to
ship or is near enough that you can pick it up. Most
that I've seen state that the seller will NOT ship,
and that you must pick it up or arrange to have a
friend or freight company pick it up ($50-$100?) to
ship it to you.
You can also keep an eye on VTR.org classifieds and
Triumphspitfire.com classifieds.
Once you add Intnl. shipping to the $400 Lenham top,
and add cosmetics, hardware and freight to a $200 used
factory installed top, you're probably going to be in
that same price range as Smooth Line.
Looking at the smoothline photograph, the 1500 top is
a bit more rounded than the Lenham or factory tops and
looks like the rear window uses a Miata style oval
rather than the rhomboid shape. It also seems that
they have a smooth black-primed fiberglass gel finish
(like the factory steel) or a vinyl covered finish
alternative (Like the aftermarket ones). All together
I like the looks of it more than the lenham or stock
1500 top.
I'd be interested in knowing what Smoothline charges
for a hard top. Let us know if they get back in touch
with you and what they say.
