I believe you may have misapplied that tension.  The tension is to the fabric 
of the top, 
not the frame.  The frame can pull the top fabric tight while still aligning 
with the windscreen.

My soft-top is under quite a lot of tension (as per the fitting 
instructions), and the one I replaced was too.   This could be the root 
cause of the problem - excessive tension of the soft-top.
