I always thought the whole right hand / left hand thing was really defined by 
the side of the road we drive on. you arent able to see properly if you are on 
the wrong side.

And who would have designed a gear lever on the door side? for a start theres 
the mechanics of it - let alone the amount of space you would have to have.
