Without getting too technical, and without taking the diff
to a specialist shop for a full rebuild can anyone advise on
the feasability and practicability of the following repair:
My Driveshaft front U joint went causing bad vibration in
the drive shaft. Now the front pinion seal in the diff
leaks badly, and I believe I can move the pinion a tiny
amount side to side. Is it possible that the drive shaft
imbalance caused the pinion bearings to go?
Or is it possible to tighten the preload on the pinion by re
arranging shims, without installing new bearings at this
time?
If the bearing is gone:
Can the front pinion bearing be replaced by taking the diff
apart (but not the spiders and crown wheel assembly). This
is on a MK IV with the spacer washers to give the pinion the
correct preload.
Can I do it myself, with the help of an experienced
mechanic?
Cheers, Fred
