Those replacement rubber bases are from an MG MIDGET
(and I hear that some Jaguars use them). I had a pair
of them and sold them to another enthusiast because I
wasn't happy with the flatness of them, and the fact
that the side markers are now shaved-off.

Even though those rubber bases are close, I still say
"no cigar". The rubber bases don't have the
proprietary lean to them, and they are also smaller,
so any color fade or paint changes made to your car
while the rubber bases were in place would be
egregious.

There are many parts that are now unavailable on early
model spitfires. On mid 70's spits, the EGR counter
box , the stainless window trim and windshield washer
mechanism (push-to-pump action) is no longer available
as new.

My vote is for the rubber marker bases which everyone
on this side of the pond is looking for. (Not
completely unobtainable, but $200 for the light
assembly kit is a bit pricey and sooner or later those
oem kits will run out.)

I'm not sure about the demand, but I noticed that the
MKIII bonnet badge that says "SPITFIRE" in block
letters is also now unavailable through Rimmers. I
think they were only used for about 1-2 years. Also,
I've rarely seen the bonnet badge with the roundel,
and never seen one for sale.

P.S. I managed to do a smashing job of fixing the
original rubber bases by coating them with Black
Rubber Silicone Adhesive. First, wash the rubber
bases and dry well. I then glued together the split
pieces of dry rotted rubber with the adhesive, and
filled in the gaps where chunks of dry rotted rubber
had broken completely away. Then smeared on the
silicone and using a putty knife "buttered" the base
like you would icing a cake.
