Steve,
Technically, the spec sheet is correct. The recommended minimum
rim width for 175-70 is 5 inch. However, they will work and shouldn't
foul on 4.5 inch rims. The 5 inch recommendation is to cover the
tire manufacturer. The problem is that tires aren't designed for
cantilever (tread wider that rim) applications. If you were putting
them on a 4 inch rim, you would run into problems.

Subject: Tires and rim width
I am looking to go to 175-70/13 tires. The spec sheet at the tire mfg says
minimum width is 5 inches and the Spitfire spec book says that stock on my
'71 is 4.5. I have seen a number of people with 175's on what appear to be
stock wheels. What can I get away with and what difference will it make?
Thanks,
Steve
