Here's an interesting message posted from another email list I'm on. While
it applies to auto's in general, nothing is in reference to Spitfires.
This post is for infomational purposes only. I do not condone building
such a device.

Well that does it , I'll release a brief on my research , now. Making a
buck outta people blatently running a red light is one thing , but
robbing people of $30 million for revenue rather than saving lives is
bullsh*t.
Some list members are aware that I have been working on a number of ways
to combatting these bastard revenue raising devices for a number of
years , I was getting bored <more to the end of my financial
experimental limits> with the Infra Red end of the colour spectrum , I
have picked up a lot of good stuff about it and it's practical
applications but I knew that down the other end of the light spectrum ,
Ultra Violet , was the answer to this problem.
Something as small as an 8 watt germicidal fluro tube will ruin a photo
that is taken in the same room as the UV light is in.So here is "a good
start" in one of many ways to Fux0r a camera that wants a picture of
your number plate.
My personal recommendation is to find a _clear_ germicidal fluro
light. It's no use getting any other so called germicidal lights that
have any type of internal coating in the tube , you must be able to see
the 2 heavy filaments at each end of the 10 to 11 inch tube. The one in
front of me has the brand name of "Sylvania" "G8W made in japan ,
dangerous for skin & eyes."
You will know you have the right one because it should be hard to get ,
will probably have to be ordered in , fairly expensive , have lots of
warning signs on it & as I can't emphasise enough it must be made of
clear glass.Other smaller wattage lights can be found but getting a
holder for them may prove difficult. You have probably already seen the
holder for this little fluro light , they are often found in camping
lights , trailers , cars ,campervans etc , anywhere there is only 12
volts DC available and more than a small overhead 10 watt incandescant
light is needed , you'll find one.
TAKE HEED OF THE WARNINGS.
As usual with my most recommendations you are "playing with fire" and
these lights are no exception ,proper UV sunglasses preferably with
blinkers on the side should always be worn when closer than 10ft
possibly further.
Why do these germicidal lights work as a camera fuxor ? Good question ,
because they only give off light in the UV region it confuses the hell
out of electronic video cameras as the camera thinks it's being pointed
at the sun (where UV rays usually come from) no auto or manual camera
<I've tried> can adjust it's apeture small enough to get a good shot of
the number plate that this fluro light is reflecting onto , instead the
camera takes a nice shot of the Sun :)
A couple of tips , this light will give you a nice tan during those
colder months and will also age any paint including the number plate at
a rate of years per hour , so whatever this UV light is around needs to
be painted with a clear UV proof paint , this includes the light fitting
too , UV lights will rapidly age plastic to the point that it will
crumble in your hands.
Unfortunately I do not have the exact wavelength that the fluro light
emits , UV wavelengths are generally in the < 400 nanometer range ,
another spec sheet I have mentions 2537 Angstroms , which probably mans
jack sh*t to most people as does the 350 to 400 Nm ,but hopefully to a
few of you it will help you design , build & test a suitable
countermeasure , that is safe to use for all but the most Darwinistic
individuals.
