speedo cable leak?

Listers:

Does gearoil normally flow out of the trans speedo
drive into the speedo cable housing or is the speedo
drive designed to be sealed (J type OD)?

If the vinyl cover on the speedo cable housing is
cracked/ ripped, will gearoil leak out of it?
(TRF had 'em on sale just last month, so I can guess
the answers...)
