I noticed recently that my car smells like it's
running rich (At first I thought it might have
something to do with temperature changes?)
Anyhow..Normally, I would assume I had one side or the
other out of adjustment, but I'm perplexed as I pulled
my plugs today.

I pulled each spark plug and as I did, i noticed that
#1 and #4 are the correct nutty-brown color for a
properly adjusted carb, but plugs for cylinder #2 was
White and cylinder #3's plug was Black (sooty. I'm not
loosing oil at any large rate and don't notice any oil
deposits from the exhaust. I might have to top off the
oil every 1.5-2 thousand miles with a half a quart. So
I'm pretty sure it's not fouling from oil.)

I have a dual SU set-up like on a european spec
spitfire and I'm confused as how the same carb that
feeds the #1 cylinder just fine can make the adjacent
cylinder (#2) lean. And the exact opposite for the
other two cylinders (#4 is fine and #3 is rich).

I recently adjusted the front carb half a flat because
the number 1 cylinder was shying to the lean, so I
assumed that when I pulled them I might have the front
(1 & 2 carbs running to the rich side).

Any ideas?
